遊具などにより遊び方を規定せず、好奇心や社会性を育む「きっかけ」となる園庭を目指した。芝生の起伏は幼児の成長によって見え方が変わったり行けるところが違ったりする。水路の流れ込む砂場は固まる、さらさらの白黒特性の違う砂を用意した。壁に差し込まれている角棒は読み聞かせの際のベンチや、展示台、アスレチック、ままごとの家などに形を変える。角棒の移動は力のついた年長さんか協力を覚えないとうまくいかない。地下トンネルや観察ドームからはいつもの視点とは異なる見え方がする。凸凹飛石を最後まで行けるようになったら凄いなど、私達が考えている以上に幼児達がいろいろなルールや遊び方を生んでくれるのではと思う。

Rather than prescribing how children should play – for instance by installing typical playground equipment – the goal of this playground is to create an opportunity for curiosity and sociability to develop. As the children grow, they see the undulating grass landscape differently and are able to explore different parts of it. The square wooden bars protruding from the brick wall become benches to sit on at story time, display stands, or athletic equipment depending on the situation. The underground tunnel and observation dome give the children a new view of the world. Who can make it all the way to the end of the bumpy stepping-stone path? The idea is for the children to make up their own rules and ways of playing.
